Queensland’s native fish require adequate movement along the state’s rivers and streams for their survival. Because of this, any in-stream barriers to fish movement in Queensland are regulated under the Fisheries Act 1994.
Council discovered that the existing culvert crossing on Cristaldi’s Road was non-compliant with QLD’s fish passage requirement. This crossing is categorised as a purple zone placing it in the high-risk category.
Council identified that rectification should be immediate and engaged HARO Civil Engineering in December 2022 to complete the design works.
HARO Civil Engineering worked with specialist environmental consultant, Catchment Solutions to review the existing site and redesign a compliant crossing. Design standards set for red zones are a starting point, but all designs require site specific solutions.
During this process it was determined that the culverts be removed, and the installation of concrete floodways should be undertaken.
Hinchinbrook Shire Council undertook the remediation works in 2022 resulting in a crossing with fish passage compliance.
