HARO Civil Engineering were engaged review the design of Perkins Flat Road with a focus to minimise dust concerns for residents. This site presented challenges with very large native trees flanking both sides and featured a significant 1800mm reinforced concrete pipe culvert with hand-placed concrete, bluestone headwalls, wingwalls, and aprons.

We undertook a significant risk assessment aligned with the Austroads Guide to Road Design. The objective was to determine the smallest safe road cross-section, considering both horizontal and vertical alignments, with a focus on minimising impact on the surrounding large native trees.

Converting it into a 2-lane sealed road would have necessitated the removal of numerous native trees and an extension of the major culvert, demanding the removal and replacement of the associated headwalls.

A key consideration was the preservation of the 1800mm RCP culvert, involving adjustments to pavement width and the implementation of a single-lane bridge treatment.

This approach addressed the immediate concerns and provided a sustainable and cost-effective solution. This project showcases the importance of balancing infrastructure development with environmental preservation, resulting in a win-win scenario for the community and the natural habitat.
