In 2021, Toowoomba Regional Council (TRC) initiated a project funded by TMR Cycle grants, with the aim of building a shared cycleway and cycle street from Alderley St to Pierce St.
This project was not just about infrastructure development but also a new approach to urban planning in Toowoomba. It involved extensive research and careful design to create the city’s first ‘Cycle Street,’ promoting safe coexistence between cyclists and motorists in a low-speed street environment.
HARO Civil Engineering was chosen to lead this project due to our past successful collaborations with the Council, our experience in cycleway development, a strong relationship with the TMR Cycle Grants team, and our commitment to finding innovative solutions for the public’s benefit.
The project’s completion has provided the region with a fully compliant active transport pathway. It connects the West Creek active corridor to existing cycleway infrastructure, passing through the Toowoomba City Golf Club and leading to the central business district (CBD). This achievement, while significant, is also a reflection of forward-thinking urban planning in Toowoomba. It’s a milestone in enhancing mobility options and sustainable living in the city.
Looking back, the creation of Toowoomba’s first cycle street not only expanded physical infrastructure but also strengthened the community spirit.
It demonstrates how collaboration between local government bodies and experienced stakeholders can bring positive changes to the city. By enabling safe and convenient cycling in the urban landscape, this project has rejuvenated the area, promoted active transportation, and fostered unity and progress among its residents.
Our Council team of 1,700 look after over 590 kilometres of paths, tracks and trails, 6,610 kilometres of road, 364 bus stops, 6 visitor information centres, 561 parks, 22 dog off-leash parks and 200 playgrounds. And if that isn’t enough, we also maintain 22 skate parks, 2 cultural centres, 13 libraries, 9 pools and over 7,700 hectares of open space.
